1)一段動詞いちだんどうし / -ru verbs 

Replace final る by た.
食たべる　→　食たべた
起おきる　→　起おきた
いる　→　いた

2) 五段動詞ごだんどうし / -u verbs 

The past tense conjugation depends on the ending of the verb, there are 5 subgroups in regular verbs. 

For verbs ending in う, つ or る, remove う, つ, or る and add った
買かう　→　買かった
乗のる　→　乗のった
待まつ　→　待まった

For verbs that end in ぬ, ぶ, or む, remove ぬ, ぶ, or む and add んだ. 
死しぬ　→　死しんだ　
遊あそぶ　→　遊あそんだ
読よむ　→　読よんだ

For verbs that end in く, remove く and add いた.
書かく　→　書かいた
However, 行いく is an exception.
行いく　→　 行いった 

For verbs that end in ぐ, remove ぐ and add いだ.
泳およぐ　→　泳およいだ

For verbs that end inす, remove す and add した.
話はなす　→　話はなした

3) 不規則動詞ふきそくどうし / irregular verbs 
来くる　→　来きた
する　→　した

To construct the past negative form, change the verb into its negative form, then replace い with かった. 

教おしえる　→　教おしえない　→　教おしえなかった
会あう　→　会あわない　→　会あわなかった
する　→　しない　→　しなかった
来くる　→　来こない　→　来こなかった
ある　→　ない　→　なかった
