**There are three groups of verbs in Japanese **

1. 五段動詞ごだんどうし / -u verbs

Verbs ending in う、 く、 ぐ、 す、 つ、 ぶ、 ぬ、 む、 る

Verbs in -u have a consonantal stem which is obtained by removing the final '-u' from the dictionary form.

2. 一段動詞いちだんどうし/ -ru verbs

Verbs ending in 'iru' or 'eru' in romaji.

Their radical is vowel and is obtained by deleting the final -ru.

3. 不規則動詞ふきそくどうし/ irregular verbs：する (to do) et 来くる (to come)

**There are three levels of politeness**

1. Polite form 丁寧語ていねいご

2. Honorific form 尊敬語そんけいご

3. Modest/humble form 謙譲語けんじょうご

### Polite verb -ます form

It is a conclusive form, it ends the sentence.
To make a sentence polite, the ます form is used. It is formed in the following way:

1. 一段動詞いちだんどうし / -ru verbs : Radical + ます

食たべる : Radical 食たべ →　食たべます

見みる : Radical 見み →　見みます

起おきる : Radical 起おき →　起おきます

いる : Radical い→　います

2) 五段動詞ごだんどうし / -u verbs : Radical + iます

泳およぐ oyogu : Radical oyog → 泳およぎます oyogimasu

3) 不規則動詞ふきそくどうし / irregular verbs : only する (to do) et 来くる(to come)

We replace the last vowel 'u' with 'i' and then add ます.

する → します Replace す with し

くる → きます Replace く with き

### Polite adjectives : +です

Reminder: In Japanese, there are two kinds of adjectives: adjectives in -な and adjectives in -い.
To make a polite sentence, we replace だ with です.
The conjugation of adjectives in -な is almost the same as that for nouns.

有名ゆうめいだ → 有名ゆうめいです

| Tense | Conjugation |
| --- | --- |
| Present affirmative | 有名ゆうめいです |
| Present negative +です | 有名ゆうめいじゃないです |
| Past affirmative だった→でした | 有名ゆうめいでした |
| Past negative じゃなかった+です | 有名ゆうめいじゃなかったです |

There is a more formal negative conjugation :

有名ゆうめいじゃない → 有名ゆうめいではありません

| Tense | Conjugation |
| --- | --- |
| Present negative | 有名ゆうめいではありません |
| Past negative | 有名ゆうめいではありませんでした |

For -い adjectives, just add です

寒さむい → 寒さむいです

| Tense | Conjugation |
| --- | --- |
| Present affirmative | 寒さむいです |
| Present negative | 寒さむくないです |
| Past affirmative | 寒さむかったです |
| Past negative | 寒さむくなかったです |

There is a more formal negative conjugation :

寒さむくない → 寒さむくありません

| Tense | Conjugation |
| --- | --- |
| Present negative | 寒さむくありません |
| Past negative | 寒さむくありませんでした |
