# JLPT N3 - Draw a conclusion (わけだ、ということだ)

### わけだ

 This expression is used to give the result of an action or fact when you realise something. It means "to make sense" in English.

 

To use it :

1)Verbes : verbe + わけだ 

 

2)Adjectives -i : adjective + わけだ 

 

3)Adjectives -na : adjective + な + わけだ

 

4)Nouns : noun +である+わけだ or noun + な + わけだ

 このカップは20年前から使っている。

壊こわれるわけだ。

I think this mug finally broke due to wear and tear from 20 years of use."

 外は雪が降っている。

寒さむいわけだ 。

It's snowing outside. No wonder it's cold.

  　彼はバイオリンを３歳から習っている。どうりで、

上手じょうずなわけだ。

He started learning to play the violin at the age of 3. That's why he is talented.

 

 だ can be replaced by である.

Conjugate the sentences below with わけだ form. 

彼かれは人気にんきだ。 

Answer →

彼かれは人気にんきなわけだ。

Translation →

That's why he is popular.

この授業じゅぎょうは面白おもしろいわけだ。

Answer →

この授業じゅぎょうは面白おもしろいわけだ。

Translation →

That's why this course is interesting.

結婚けっこんしてから10年じゅうねん経たった。

Answer →

結婚けっこんしてから10年じゅうねん経たったわけだ。

Translation →

It has been 10 years since we got married.

 

Translate the sentences below into Japanese, using the わけだ form.

He has been living in Japan for 10 years, so that's why he speaks Japanese very well.

Answer →

彼かれは日本にほんで10年住ねんすんでいる。だから、彼かれは日本語にほんごを上手うまく話はなすわけだ。

 

Oh, there's road work going on, so that's why there was a traffic jam. 

Answer →

ああ、工事こうじしてる。だから、渋滞じゅうたいしてたわけだ。

### ということだ

ということだ is often used to draw a conclusion or rephrase a sentence, and it can be translated to "that means" or "in other words" in English.

1)Verbes : verbe +ということだ 

2)Adjectives -i : adjective +ということだ 

3)Adjectives -na : adjective +(だ)+ということだ

4)Nouns : noun +(だ)+ということだ

It means that we succeeded.

This proves that it's boring.

It means that it's convenient.

This shows that he is happy.

 ということだ can be replaced by ってことだ (plus familiar)  
満足まんぞくだということだ→満足まんぞくだってことだ

**Exercices**

Conjugate the sentences below with the ということだ form. 

この店みせは有名ゆうめいです。 

Answer →

この店みせは有名ゆうめいだということだ。

Translation →

It means that this store is popular.

この企画きかくは無なくなってしまった。

Answer →

この企画きかくは無なくなってしまったということだ。

Translation →

It means that this project has been abandoned.

 

Translate the sentences below into Japanese, using the ということだ form.

This restaurant opens at 6pm. That means you have to wait another hour.

Answer →

このレストランは１８時じに開店かいてんする。あと１時間じかん待またなければならないということだ。

 

I can't run like I used to. It shows that I'm getting older.

Answer →

もう昔むかしのように走はしれない。年としをとってしまったということだ。
