# 「something」 と 「anything」の違い

「something」、「 anything」については中学校で早めの段階で学習し、単語としては簡単な方ではないでしょうか。しかし、実際に使うときには紛らわしく、混乱しやすいのが問題です。

 

多くの人は「something」、「 anything」のどちらも「なにか」と覚えるので混乱するのではないかと感じています。

 

みなさん、学校では「something」 は肯定文のみで使われる。「anything」 は疑問文や否定文で使われると学習すると思います。これは間違いではなく、基本的にはOKな考え方です。

 

しかし、学校を卒業して生の英語に触れると、実際には「something」を疑問文、「anything」を肯定文で使う場合も耳にすることがあると思います。日常会話や歌、ドラマなど。

 

ここで今回は、「something」と「anything」の違いについて説明していきます。

### 1. 肯定文での「something」と「anything」の使い分け

Something　「何か」

**【例】** I want something to eat. （なにか食べたいです。）

Anything 「何でも」「どれでも」

**【例】** I am hungry, I can eat anything! （お腹が空いた。なんでも食べられる！）

 

### 2. 疑問文での「something」と「anything」の使い分け

Something　

**【説明】** 返答が「Yes」になると予想している質問文使う

**【例】** Would you like something to drink? （何かお飲み物はいかがですか？）

Anything　

**【説明１】**「Yes」か「No」の返事を求める時に使う

**【例】**Anything else? （他に何かご注文は？）

**【説明２】**「何でもいいから」と言いたい時

**【例】**Can you give me anything to drink? （何でもいいので飲むものをくれませんか？）

 

### ３. 否定文での「something」と「anything」の使い分け

Something 「何か」

**【説明】**否定文中で「something」を使うことができるのは、「something」を主語として用いる場合のみ。

**【例】**Something is not right. （何か問題があります）

Anything 「何も～ない」

**【例】**We don’t need anything.（何も要りません）

- 肯定文での「something」の意味は「何か」、「anything」の意味は「何でも」
